Building Bridges Basketball was created in 2017 by Zimbabwe Davies in partnership with Soldiertown and the Oakland Police Department, Building Bridges is a movement that helps bridge the gap with community and police officers through basketball and community forums. The purpose of this movement is to help improve community relations with the community and police officers in different settings. Davies believes that a change in settings like an indoor basketball court or having community and police at youth base organizations helps breaks barriers, and that creates the dialogue that can create change. The first basketball game took place July 29th 2018 at Soldiertown in Oakland with youth, adults and police officers. OPD won the game, but overall the win went to the city of Oakland for demonstrating the first step in bridging the gap between community and police. We give our youth opportunities to volunteer at the events, play basketball, and incorporate them in the community forums so their voice is heard.
In addition we have:
Have Backpack Giveaways for youth at the basketball game
Food at the games and community forums
A Juice Bar at the game to support healthier choices
Face painting for kids at basketball game
Everything is free of charge to the community and all we ask for is everyone's participation. It's not about ME it's about WE.
